Following the assassination attempt on former US President Donald Trump, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday expressed deep concern, calling him a “friend”. Modi, who is known for his close relationship with the businessman-turned-politician, stressed that violence has no place in politics and democracy.
“Deeply concerned by the attack on my friend, former President Donald Trump. I strongly condemn this incident. Violence has no place in politics or in our democracy. I pray for his speedy recovery,” PM Modi posted on X.
He also expressed solidarity with the American people.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who died, those injured and the American people,” he added.
A gunman fired multiple shots at Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump in an attempt to assassinate him while he was speaking at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, killing one spectator and wounding two others. US Secret Service agents neutralized the gunman, but US authorities are currently investigating his identity and motive.
When the first shot rang out, Donald Trump covered his ears. Agents in black suits quickly surrounded him and took him away to a waiting SUV. Trump, with blood streaming from his face from an ear injury, put up a defensive stance, pumping his fist in the air and saying “fight” before being taken away.
US authorities later said Trump’s injuries were not serious. Trump detailed the incident on his social networking site, Truth Social, saying the bullet grazed the top of his right ear.
“A bullet went through the top of my right ear,” Trump wrote on his app, adding, “When I heard the whoosh and the gunshot and felt the bullet penetrate my skin I immediately knew something was wrong. I cannot believe this kind of act could happen in my country.”
Donald Trump remains the leading candidate for the presidential election.
