The FBI named 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as the shooter.
Here’s what we know so far:
-What happened to former President Donald Trump?
Trump spoke at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on Saturday.
He was holding up a graph showing the number of people crossing the border when explosions began to ring out just after 6:10pm local time.
The former president grimaced and stretched his right hand out to the side of his head, blood streaming from his face.
He quickly ducked down as Secret Service agents rushed onto the stage and surrounded him.
Screams erupted from the audience as the explosions continued.
The crowd cheered as Trump rose again, pumped his fist and was escorted to the motorcade. Police evacuated the scene shortly after Trump left the stage.
Authorities said one rally participant was killed and two other spectators, all identified as men, were seriously injured.
The suspect, who attacked from a “high position” outside the rally venue, was shot dead.
The FBI took over the investigation.
– Are you okay, Mr. Trump?
The photo showed the former president with blood on his right ear and part of his face.
“I was shot above the right ear,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
Spokesman Steven Chang said Trump was in “good spirits,” while the former president’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., said his father was in “very good spirits.”
– What does Trump say?
“I want to thank the United States Secret Service and all law enforcement agencies for their swift response to the shooting that occurred in Butler, Pennsylvania,” Trump wrote.
“Most importantly, we would like to express our condolences to the family of the person who died at the rally, and to the family of another person who was seriously injured.”
“I can’t believe this kind of behavior would happen in our country.”
He added: “I heard a whoosh and a gunshot and felt the bullets cutting through my skin so I knew straight away something was wrong.”
“There was a lot of bleeding and we realized what was going on. God bless America!”
– Where did Trump go after that? He was tested at a local medical facility before flying to New Jersey.
– Who is the suspect? The FBI has named Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as the suspect. State voter records show Crooks is a registered Republican. The November 5 election will be the first time Crooks has been old enough to vote in a presidential election.
– What was the motive? A motive has yet to be determined, but authorities are treating the shooting as an assassination attempt.
– What did US President Joe Biden say? The White House confirmed that President Joe Biden had been briefed on the incident and spoke with President Trump hours after the shooting. The president called the shooting “sickening,” adding that “there is no place for this kind of violence in America.”
– What was the reaction around the world?
Leaders around the world called the attempted assassination of President Donald Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania a “tragedy for democracy” and condemned political violence.
The Secret Service said the shooting left Trump with an ear injury, one spectator dead and two others “seriously injured”, and Starmer said he was “appalled”.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who recently returned from Washington, D.C., where he was marking the 75th anniversary of NATO’s founding, said he expected the United States to “emerge stronger” from the shootings.
“This type of violence cannot be justified and has no place anywhere in the world,” he continued in his post on X (formerly Twitter).
“Violence should never win.
“We are relieved to know that Donald Trump is safe and wish him a speedy recovery.”
“We extend our condolences to the families of the rally participants who were killed in this attack.
“I pray for strength for all who feel horrified by this incident. I hope America emerges from this stronger.”
European Council President Charles Michel also “strongly condemned” the attack, adding in a post on X that “political violence is totally unacceptable in a democracy.”
French President Emmanuel Macron struck a similar tone, describing the assassination attempt on Trump as a “tragedy for our democracy”.
