Tehran
Azerbaijan’s embassy in Tehran resumed operations on Monday after more than a year of negotiations aimed at easing tensions between the two countries, Iranian semi-official media reported.
An Azerbaijani embassy official in Tehran told The Associated Press that the embassy has resumed operations in the Iranian capital, but no official announcement will be made until the Iranian Foreign Ministry confirms the development.
However, Azerbaijani website news.az reported on Monday that the Iranian embassy in the country has resumed operations at a new address in Tehran, citing Azerbaijan’s foreign ministry. The report added that the embassy was reopened following negotiations between Azerbaijan and Iran.
Relations between Tehran and Baku, long tense, further deteriorated in January 2023 when gunmen stormed the Azerbaijani embassy in the Iranian capital, killing the security chief and wounding two guards.
Iran said the attack was for personal reasons and that the perpetrator’s wife had gone missing after visiting the embassy, but Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev called it a “terrorist attack.”
Relations between Iran and Azerbaijan improved during the term of the late Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi. In May, Iran and Azerbaijan inaugurated the Kis Karashi (Castle of Girls in Azerbaijani) dam on the river that runs along the border in northwestern Iran. President Aliyev also attended the opening ceremony.
During the ceremony, Raisi said ties between Tehran and Baku went beyond being neighbours and were “unbreakable.”
