What tree?
Regarding the April 28 article, “Miami-Dade County's urban tree project fails to protect residents from record heat.” There is no tree project. Even if there is, it is not noticeable. High-rise complexes are being built across the county, and no one is planting trees in the Everglades.
I live in Coconut Grove and people are tearing down houses and cutting out all the leaves and giant trees to build box houses. Miami-Dade County government should be ashamed. There is no respect for nature.
After the rain, people are complaining that the roads are flooded. Maybe someone should have thought about that problem before building a skyscraper. Builders should be ashamed of their greed and how it is impacting our environment.

student movement
I don't find it interesting to discuss these college campus protests without criticizing the protests against Vietnam from decades ago. Seems a little hypocritical.
At least these students don't have to flee to Canada, as there is currently no conscription. Anyway, what an interesting double standard!

Deforestation Dade
Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava can be very hypocritical and blunt when it comes to the county's urban tree projects. What has been done under her leadership is absolutely despicable. Just drive down the south leg of Historic Old Cutler Road and you'll notice that not only are the beautiful canopies of trees that lined the street gone, but the 50-year-old trees that once covered the streets are gone. You can also see that the shady trees are completely ignored. The road has been cleared.
Where did Cava's much-vaunted “restoration efforts” go when they added more asphalt and less shade at the expense of the environment, creating a two-lane Loop instead of a one-lane Loop?
Drivers have enough time to detour around a single roundabout. Now they are forced to double circle.
Our mayor should be ashamed.
Perhaps she should take one of the many “photoshoots” about the concrete and asphalt landscaping projects she is so proud of that are negatively impacting the quality of life for those of us living in Pinecrest and Palmetto Bay .

condominium subsidy
Our condo maintenance costs have increased by over $100 per month this year, primarily due to insurance premium increases. Since the roof of our house has exceeded its useful life of 20 years, it will need to be completely replaced through a special evaluation.
Miami-Dade County is helping condo owners with a 40-year zero percent interest loan for $50 per month. The state issued grants of up to $175,000 per condominium association for roofs and hurricane shutters. This system significantly reduces the special assessment amount and insurance premium.
If Herald readers live in an apartment complex in Miami-Dade, we highly recommend considering both programs.

Miami leads the nation in the number of Alzheimer's patients, particularly affecting Hispanic patients, who are 1.5 times more at risk.
Standing by my grandmother's side as Alzheimer's disease slowly robbed her of her essence, I vowed to champion change. As I witnessed the devastating impact this disease was having on families across the city, I felt inspired to advocate for those affected. My grandmother remains a pillar of our family and represents so many people affected by this relentless disease.
There are two bills Congress must pass to ensure Miami families receive accurate diagnoses as quickly as possible. The Bold Reauthorization Act of 2024 and the Accelerating Access to Dementia and Alzheimer's Health Care Provider Training Act will strengthen public health infrastructure, enhance early detection, and enable health care providers to deliver quality care. It is extremely important to do so.
U.S. Congressman Carlos Jimenez must join the Alzheimer's Association in supporting these important bills and supporting our community in this important fight. Ensure a bright future for families affected by Alzheimer's disease and all dementias.

April 26th: “'Name Withdraws.'' Filmmaker Billy Corben Leaves Race to Lead Dade Democratic Party,'' Miami-Dade Democratic Party Says It Will Focus More on Voter Registration Efforts . they really need to do this.
The number of registered Republicans in Florida remained largely unchanged at 5.2 million from 2020 to 2024, according to the Florida Department of Elections. By contrast, the number of Democrats in Florida fell from 5.3 million in 2020 to 4.3 million in 2024, a decline of nearly 1 million voters.
Florida is now a Republican state, not because there are more Republican voters, but because there are far fewer Democrats. Figuring out what happened to the roughly 1 million Democratic voters who are no longer registered should be a top priority for Democrats in Miami-Dade and other parts of the state.

An April 28 article titled “Angry Globe Isle residents sued city for building condominiums in violation of Miami law.'' In this case, the developer did not consider the residents of Building 3 because of the following reasons: are allowed to ruin their idyllic landscape. Greed, poor management, and local government.
It reminds me of the “Spite Wall” built by the Fontainebleau Resort Hotel in 1962 that blocked off the pool area of the Eden Roc Hotel. After 62 years, the apples are still rotting.

tough guy
I don't support either presidential candidate, but this is clear: President Joseph Biden is on trial, facing three more indictments, multiple civil lawsuits, and constant debunking in which most news outlets take his statements out of context or inappropriately edit them. If there was, he wouldn't be able to deal with it.
Say what you want about former President Donald Trump's personality and outbursts, but he is the toughest and most resilient person. He juggles many high-stress issues that target him at once, and his ability to remain calm is unusual. Despite all this, he continues to campaign vigorously. can't believe it. I'm willing to bet that our adversaries and competitors are no different.

confusion in court
Above the front door of the U.S. Supreme Court building are the words “Equal Justice Under the Law.” This word is considered inviolable and represents the ultimate responsibility of the court. As guardians and interpreters of the Constitution, courts make decisions based on law, not politics, ensuring equality before the law, the foundation of democracy, and holding all citizens, institutions, and groups accountable. Responsible.
The justices are clearly divided over whether former President Donald Trump should be immune from federal charges that he tried to illegally overturn the 2020 presidential election, with a conservative majority calling the shots. The dismantling of the Equal Justice Covenant may have already begun. offshore.
The framers of our Constitution intended for the judiciary to be apolitical. More than two centuries later, the Roberts Court, whose right-wing majority has broken with its framers, is indistinguishable from elected officials with partisan policies.

The celebration of life of former Miami Herald editorial page editor Nancy Ankrum on April 13 at the Fairchild Tropical Botanical Gardens was a true gift. Among her meaningful tributes was the way Nancy brought people together.
I met Nancy's husband George on her own bench near Nancy's butterfly garden and the butterflies she loves. I told her that I knew Nancy as her letter writer. I mentioned an ice cream meetup she organized for consistent writers on the Readers Forum in May 2017. Delighted to meet her fellow letterwriters in person, Nancy brought along former Herald humor columnist Dave Barry, reporter Howard Cohen, and former editor-in-chief. Mindy Marquez tells us. This was an inspiration.
Nancy used this event to show her care and respect for the letter writer. She remembers her words about our individual differences. “I can't be mad over ice cream!”
She gathered us together that day. I let George know that Nancy was and always will be a gift that keeps on giving.
