The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has advised all British nationals not to travel to Turkey, mainly due to “terrorism and fighting”. The UK Government regularly updates its travel advice for the 226 countries listed on its website. The FCDO has issued a new warning for people planning to visit Turkey, the Liverpool Echo reported on Saturday.
According to the FCDO website, three areas in Turkey should be avoided at all costs: Şurnak city, Hakkari province and the border with Syria. The FCDO has advised against “all but essential travel” to two specific areas of the country.
The Liverpool Echo newspaper quoted a spokesperson as saying: “The FCDO advises against traveling within 10km of the border with Syria due to the increased risk of fighting and terrorism.”
The GOV.UK website provides a detailed overview of the threats in Turkey. “Most terrorist attacks occur in southeastern Turkey, Ankara and Istanbul. You should always be aware of your surroundings, keep up-to-date with local media reports, and follow the advice of local authorities.” .
The FCDO added: “Travelling against FCDO advice could result in UK nationals' travel insurance being invalidated.” Where the FCDO advises against travel, consular support will also be significantly limited.
Advice on three areas includes:
“The FCDO advises against traveling within 10km of the border with Syria due to the increased risk of fighting and terrorism.”
“The FCDO advises against all non-essential travel to the city of Şurnak.”
“The FCDO advises against all but essential travel to Hakkari State.”
