BLACKSBURG, VA – The Ohio State baseball team (14-27, 9-15 MAC) lost both games in a doubleheader against Virginia Tech (30-14, 13-11 ACC) on Saturday in May (14-1 , 14-2). Four.
Game 1: Virginia Tech 14, Ohio State 1
Overall, Ohio State scored one run on seven hits and committed one error. Virginia Tech made no errors and scored 14 points on 13 hits.
Redshirt junior AJ Rausch (Powell, Ohio) led the Bobcats with a 2-for-3 performance and one RBI. Senior Cole Williams (Charlotte, N.C.) had Ohio State's only RBI and had one hit.
On the mound, junior Dillon Masters (New Albany, Ohio) pitched three innings, giving up seven hits and eight runs, striking out four batters and walking five in the loss. Graduate student Tim Knapschafer (Maria Stein, Ohio) finished the game with six hits, six runs, four batters struck out, and one walk.
Virginia Tech started the scoring in the bottom of the second inning, scoring five points. Ohio State's offense was held scoreless, and the Hokies continued to extend their lead to 14-0 after six innings.
Rausch led off in the seventh inning with a single to center field and advanced to third base in his next at-bat, poised in scoring position. Williams hit a hit to center field, bringing Roush home and giving the Bobcats a one-run lead.
The game ended after seven innings due to the mercy rule, with Virginia Tech winning 14-1.
Game 2: Virginia Tech 14, Ohio State 2
The Bobcats scored two runs on seven hits with no errors, while Virginia Tech scored 14 runs on 13 hits with no errors.
The Bobcats' offense was led by senior Gideon Antle (Licking, Mo.), who had two hits to go with Ohio State's two RBIs. Freshman J.R. Nelson (Vernon Hills, Illinois) had 3 hits for his 4 at bats and he scored one run.
The starting pitcher for the Bobcats was junior Hudson Boncal (Corona, Calif.), who pitched three innings, allowing nine hits and nine runs, striking out four batters and walking three. Junior Adam Beery (Ravenna, Ohio) pitched two innings, allowing two hits and two runs, and walking two batters.
Virginia Tech took an early advantage, scoring six runs through the first two innings. Ohio State took the lead in the top of the third inning. Antle utilized runners on all bases and hit a double down the right field line, sending two Bobcats racing through home plate to make the score 6-2.
Virginia Tech scored eight more points and ultimately won 14-2 in the seventh inning.
