Expedia Group has announced an artificial intelligence (AI) assistant designed to help travelers plan their trips.
Romie, the new AI assistant, can help you plan, shop, book and make changes during your trip, the global travel platform announced in a press release on Tuesday (May 14).
According to the release, Romie is in alpha and available at EG Labs, the company's hub for experimental products.
“We believe in reimagining the travel experience and leveraging the latest AI to bring it to life,” Rathi Murthy, chief technology officer at Expedia Group, said in a release. With Romie, we've done just that.”
According to the release, Romie will be invited to a user's SMS group chat where he can listen to their vacation plans and offer suggestions.
AI assistants can use what they learn from group chats to personalize their shopping experience, use travel information from emails to suggest restaurants and activities at their destination, and provide suggestions to users. They can also assist in troubleshooting issues, the release states.
Additionally, while traveling, Romie can update the customer's itinerary in real time. According to the release, the service allows anyone in a group chat to see what a traveler is doing, and if they're picking up a traveler at the airport, they can also see when their plane is landing.
“We created our AI assistant with hyper-personalization in mind, so travelers can choose at their discretion when they want Romy assistance,” Murthy said in a release. Ta. “Romy can help travelers dream, plan, travel, or even when things don't go as planned, getting smarter as they interact.”
In December 2023, it was reported that Expedia plans to use AI to change the way people plan their trips and vacations. The company aims to use its flight and hotel information library, along with users' travel preferences, to streamline the travel planning process and increase direct traffic to the site.
When then-CEO Peter Kahn announced in February that he was stepping down, Kahn spoke about how the company's IT footprint had been optimized and how Expedia was developing AI and machine learning ( Learned how to leverage ML) capabilities to improve both productivity and customer service.
