However, it is worth noting that the WEF data focuses on tourism-related aspects such as hotels, airports, tourist attractions and airlines, and not on travelers' on-site experiences.
Europe is well represented in the top 10, with six countries making the list, including Spain in second place. The WEF report defines the continent as “a dynamic destination with high intra-regional travel”.
The continent scored highly for its rail links, strong economies, the stability of the euro and pound, and the increasing mobility of Europeans which translates into spending.
The strength of European passports also figured prominently in the rankings: six countries – France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Singapore and Spain – will share the top spot for the world's most powerful passports in 2024, according to the Henry Index, data included in the WEF report.
“In 2024, global tourism growth is expected to thrive as travel restrictions are lifted and latent demand and growth in key Asian markets is met,” the report said.
Japan, ranked third, is experiencing a tourism boom as borders reopened after the pandemic, while China, ranked eighth, has taken steps to make it easier for tourists to visit by waiving visa requirements for residents of some European countries.
