Popular nutritionist Luke Coutinho recently criticised Zomato and Swiggy for using plastic packaging for hot dishes. Highlighting the health risks, Coutinho urged restaurants under the food delivery platforms to switch to biodegradable, non-plastic packaging for “better health and a better planet”.
The nutritionist shared a note on Instagram which read, “Swiggy, Zomato, restaurants… please work with your partners to ensure food delivery is in biodegradable non-plastic containers… Many restaurants are already doing this but please standardise… Deliver food and health… Hot food in plastic makes people more sick… You have the power to make a change.”
Sharing the note, he wrote, “People want their food on time…so restaurants cook orders over high heat, ruining most of the ingredients, and use more refined oils as a quick cooking medium…directly from the pan or vessel into a plastic container, then quickly cover to trap in tons of heat and steam.”
“As we all know, this heat breaks down plastic producing dangerous BPA and other toxins which wreak havoc on the human body, hormones, fertility, estrogen etc. We need to move towards biodegradable non-plastic as soon as possible for better health and a better planet. @swiggyindia @zomato @fssai_safefood have the power to make this change and be part of a healthier India. I respectfully request @swiggyindia @zomato and @fssai_safefood @fssai_group_of_india to resolve this issue,” he added.

Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal responded to the post. Acknowledging Coutinho's concerns, Goyal wrote, “Thank you for raising this issue, Luke. We will do all we can to promote restaurants that use food-safe packaging and empower customers to make more conscious choices.”
The post received a lot of responses, with one user commenting, “This is why I have stopped ordering soups and hot meals from Swiggy and Zomato. I only order salads,” while another user commented, “I totally agree with this. This was really needed.”
