Families with toddlers and preschoolers have been visiting Punta Cana more often this year, while older kids have been accompanying mom and dad to visit the historic European city.
MONTREAL , June 27, 2024 /CNW/ – When it comes to traveling with kids, Canadians know that the destination they choose can make the trip even more enjoyable. For parents of young children this summer, that means a getaway to a Caribbean resort town, while families with teenagers prefer to experience the historic tourist options of Europe.

Family Travel: Punta Cana for Little Ones, Rome for Teens
According to travel data from Air Transat, which was named the World's Best Leisure Airline for the sixth time at the 2024 Skytrax World Airline Awards, the most popular choices for family travel bookings for the 2024 peak summer season (June to August) are Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic and Rome in Italy.
Punta Cana is the summer destination with the highest growth in bookings for families with children under five, but Rome is increasingly becoming the destination of choice for adults traveling with older school-aged and teenage kids.
“In the early stages of parenthood, adults clearly want to travel to places where they can relax, recharge their batteries and lounge by a pool or beach,” said Xavier Swengler, Transat's vice president of marketing and loyalty. “But once their kids outgrow the stroller, more parents are prioritizing educational destinations that help them broaden their horizons. Rome, in particular, offers a never-ending supply of activities and discoveries on family travel itineraries. Families can travel with peace of mind, trusting Air Transat to provide them with excellent care and service wherever their adventure takes them.”
Families are very important to Air Transat. The airline offers a variety of family perks to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable journey. These include free seat assignments so families can sit together, as well as priority check-in and boarding. In addition, Air Transat offers a Kids Club with a variety of perks for children between the ages of 2 and 11, including in-flight surprises and priority baggage handling. With these dedicated services, Air Transat makes traveling with children easier and more enjoyable, allowing families to focus on creating unforgettable memories together.

Travel experiences for all ages
Other Air Transat data revealed that while Rome, Paris, London and Lisbon are the most popular destinations for all adult age groups this summer, travelers over 55 heading to Portugal are more likely to choose Porto over Lisbon. Porto, a coastal city in northwest Portugal, is also surprisingly the most popular destination for travelers with pets, as many of the activities in the region are pet-friendly.
In addition to popular destinations, Air Transat's latest data reveals some interesting statistics about how different generations travel: Millennials are most likely to take short weekend getaways, with Cancun and Punta Cana ranking highly, while Gen X and Baby Boomers prefer to take vacations of two weeks or more in European destinations such as Paris, Rome, Athens, Porto and Lisbon.
Millennials are also the generation that travels with the most luggage, while Baby Boomers and Gen Xers prefer to reserve their seats in advance for peace of mind. With Option Plus, these travelers can enjoy more perks and services in economy class, including one checked bag included, seat assignments and priority service at the airport.
Solo travel: Paris and London lead the way
Paris, London, Rome and Lisbon top the list for travelers considering solo trips this summer: Paris has seen a 48 percent increase in bookings this year, while London is up 39 percent. Those traveling in pairs tend to favor similar destinations, but Rome has seen a 56 percent increase in bookings, while Paris is up 50 percent.
One thing is certain: the desire to travel is stronger than in pre-pandemic years. Air Transat has an extensive flight program this summer from Montreal, Toronto and Quebec City, offering more than 280 nonstop flights per week to more than 40 destinations, including the addition of year-round flights to Lima (Peru) and Marrakech (Morocco).
