Wild Tan has finally claimed the title of world's ugliest dog. The 8-year-old Pekingese from Oregon, US, took part in five contests before winning the grand prize. He had previously come second three times, but Friday was a triumphant day for the toothless dog.

The winning Pekingese will receive a prize of $5,000, making him a very wealthy pet indeed.
“He was a fan favorite. He was like a bridesmaid, never the bride,” judge Fiona Marr told The Associated Press. “He really pulled at our heartstrings and was very deserving of the award.”
Wild Tan was diagnosed with canine distemper when he was just a 10-week-old puppy. The disease caused him to stop teething and also caused muscle problems in one of his legs. Now his fur is a frizzy, grey clump, his tongue hangs out and one of his legs can't move properly. Despite this, Wild Tan is a happy, healthy dog.

“He's a really sweet dog. I was just holding him, and he loves to be held and cuddled,” Judge Ma told The Associated Press. “He's never had a haircut, so that's how it is. (His owners) shave his belly and he likes to sleep on an ice pack.”
Celebrate imperfection
The World's Ugliest Dog Contest aims to celebrate the imperfections that make each dog unique. The contest's website states, “For nearly 50 years, the World's Ugliest Dog Contest has proven that pedigree doesn't define a pet.” The contest “promotes the importance of loving all animals and highlighting the benefits of adoption.”
In fact, most of the dogs who take part in the “World's Ugliest Dog” contest are rescue dogs.

“I wouldn't have minded if he hadn't won. I'll be going back next year as I just want to support the cause,” Wild Sun owner Ann Lewis said.
