England – The Labour Party won a landslide victory in the UK general election, with new Prime Minister Keir Starmer saying “change starts now”. The Conservative Party suffered a humiliating defeat after 14 years in power, ending Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s term in power. Nigel Farage’s Reform UK Party gained four seats, splitting the right-wing vote and undermining the Conservatives’ chances of victory. The Liberal Democrats are now the third largest party after their first performance in years, and the Green Party also increased their number of seats. The Scottish National Party saw a significant drop in support, winning just nine seats.
Jamaica – Hurricane Beryl is currently about 160 miles from Tulum, Mexico and has strengthened into a Category 3 storm with strong winds. After causing flooding and damage in Jamaica, it weakened to a Category 2 and passed 45 miles south of Kingston as a Category 4 hurricane. Beryl is the closest major hurricane to Jamaica since 2007. It affected the Cayman Islands with strong winds and a storm surge. Beryl is expected to weaken further and hit the Yucatan Peninsula as a Category 1 hurricane, potentially bringing 120 kph winds, a storm surge of one metre and up to 20 centimetres of rain.
FRANCE – Concerns over political violence are growing in France after MPs were attacked during election campaigns. Government spokesperson Prisca Thévenot’s team was attacked, as were other politicians including Marie Dorsey and Nicolas Conquerer. President Emmanuel Macron has warned that a victory for the far-right could lead to protests and even civil war. Four people are being questioned over the attack on Thévenot’s team, which left two people hospitalised.
United States – Kanye West’s lawyer Brian Brumfield wants to drop his lawsuit against autograph dealer Justin Poplavski and his wife Tiffany Marshall. Kanye claims he attacked Poplavski for asking for his autograph due to the stress of his divorce. The couple are claiming assault, injury, emotional distress, negligence and loss of marital benefits. Brumfield says Kanye ended the relationship on June 21 with no contact or payment. The incident happened in January 2022 outside the Soho Warehouse in Los Angeles. A hearing on the attorney’s withdrawal is scheduled for July 29.
