The two-day event will feature firefighters from Ramallah, Severn, Oromedonte, Tay Township, Rama and Orillia, and aims to exceed last year's fundraising total of $5,000.
Approximately 100 local firefighters are preparing for this weekend's second annual Ishkode Cup Hockey Tournament at the Munikaning Arena Sports Ki (MASK) on the Chippewa Nation of Ramah.
The tournament, hosted by Llama Fire and Rescue Services Acting Capt. Doug Rideout and Orillia Fire Department Firefighter Darryl Armstrong, is causing “great excitement” among local firefighters.
“We had a lot of laughs last year,” Armstrong said. “Everyone got along really well and there was a sense of camaraderie between all of us.”
Although firefighters share a special brotherhood during hockey weekends, Armstrong said the games are competitive.
“It's fast hockey,” he said. “It's great to see the speed and stickhandling ability of the players.”
In last year's championship game, Orillia defeated Rama in overtime to win the inaugural Ishkode Cup.
“Orillia has been working with us for about a month to hone their skills,” Armstrong said. “We're aiming to defend the cup.”
The charity tournament will feature firefighters from Ramallah, Severn, Oromedonte, Tay Township, Rama and Orillia. Last year, he raised just under $5,000 for the mental health sector for frontline workers and first responders.
The tournament also collects non-perishable food donations for the Rama Food Distribution Program and Sharing Place Food Center.
The community is invited to attend this weekend's events to support local divisions and support the 50-50 draw and silent auction table. Organizers are still looking for local businesses and organizations willing to donate to the event's silent auction table. Please email me if you are interested [email protected].
