Beginning February 19, Toronto drivers will no longer have the privilege of parking for free on the streets during holidays, including Family Day, previously exempt from paid on-street parking rules.
The Toronto Police Service announced this shift in policy, attributing it to the escalating demand for parking spaces in the city, particularly along streetcar routes, bike lanes, and areas designated for CafeTO, alongside other infrastructure developments.
The decision stems from the absence of explicit exemptions for statutory holidays in existing bylaws, prompting alignment with regulations permitting enforcement on such days. Notably, revenue generated from parking fines contributes to the City of Toronto’s funds.
Additionally, in October, the city council approved an increase in penalties for parking violations, elevating fines from $30 to $75 for unauthorized parking or leaving vehicles on municipal property.
