Ukraine captures Russian anti-drone 'Barn' tank
Story: This is what the Ukrainian army calls a “barn” tank. The Russian tank captured by the Kiev army has a strange look, and it seems to highlight how the military is trying to adapt to the constant threat of drone attacks. Made from a rusty, battered T-62 tank, the vehicle has been modified with a boxy metal shell on the outside, a cage at the rear, and electronic warfare equipment. This is what soldiers who spoke to Reuters after the tank was captured this week said. The tank's canopy appears to be made to protect against drones, particularly cheaply made first-person drones. The drones strap on ammunition and fly them to their targets while the pilot monitors them on a screen. Dmytro is a Ukrainian soldier. “I don't even know what it (the “barn” tank) is made of. But the tracks are protected. They were bent a little bit by the shells hitting them. But this protection is useful. It prevents shells from going under and protects the tracks. Certainly, it gives the crew an advantage for a certain period of time. ” Soldiers say the main purpose of the “barn” tank was to transport food, ammunition and soldiers. Dmytro added that it was difficult to enter and exit the vehicle while carrying equipment through a small hatch. Also, visibility was very limited and the stench inside was intense. Drone aerial footage taken by the Ukrainian military and released on June 17 showed the tank captured in a forested area with a Russian crew. Kiev forces then planted a Ukrainian flag on top of the tank. Nearly 28 months after Russia launched a full-scale invasion, the use of drones by both sides has become ubiquitous on the battlefield, making it difficult for both sides to advance and operate safely. The Ukrainian side says the vehicle was captured near Kryshchiivka, a village near the Russian-occupied city of Bakhmut where months of fighting have been ongoing.
