Tensions rise ahead of South Africa's formation of a government of national unity
South Africa's weakened African National Congress (ANC) on Monday denounced “exorbitant demands” for ministerial posts by its coalition partners in a document leaked to the press amid talks to form a government.
President Cyril Ramaphosa, 71, who was re-elected for a second term, will head what his ANC calls the Government of National Unity (GNU) after losing its majority in the May 29 general election.
MK Party claims election was rigged, but members sworn in as MPs
The UMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party will not accept the results of the May 29 elections, however its members will be sworn in as MPs on Tuesday, June 25.
The MK party called off its first conference, citing inconsistencies in the electoral process for the May 29 elections.
South Africa warns against 'bloated' 2024 cabinet
The announcement of the 2024 Cabinet is likely to be the first major hurdle for South Africa's new Government of National Unity (GNU).
After failing to win a majority in the May 29 general election, the African National Congress opted to form the GNU with nine other parties in 2024. This gives the coalition a majority, with 287 of the 400 seats in the National Assembly.

The City of Cape Town has once again banned certain artwork in its Sex Expo outdoor advertising campaign after deeming it too risqué.
The Cape Town Expo is due to run from June 27 to 30. Following several complaints received by the city, “Sexpo” had to face a decision that some of its street poster art was “a bit too provocative for the City of Cape Town”.
Baboon escapes from Gauteng reserve and meets tragic fate on highway
Locals have been put on alert after a 14-year-old baboon was spotted, thought to have escaped from the Cradle of Humankind, northwest of Johannesburg.
Sadly, the male baboon was hit by a car on the highway between Fourways and Rivonia whilst searching for a new habitat.
