MTG Foundations is the newest Magic: The Gathering set due for release in 2024. It’s a beginner-friendly card collection designed to remain in Standard for at least the next five years, making it a very interesting product. Here, we’ll tell you about the Magic Foundations release date, give you the latest card spoilers, and tell you everything we currently know about this upcoming set.
Foundations will be released just two months after MTG Duskmourn, and with new sets constantly coming out, be sure to check out the MTG release schedule for the latest updates.
MTG Foundations Release Date
Magic: The Gathering Foundations will be released on November 15, 2024. This is the confirmed worldwide release date announced at MagicCon in Amsterdam in late June.
No other dates for the set have been confirmed yet, but if Wizards of the Coast sticks to their usual schedule (and there’s no reason they wouldn’t), we can assume the set will prerelease the weekend of November 8 and hit MTG Arena around November 12. Again, none of this is set in stone, so don’t mark them on your calendars with indelible marker.
When do foundations rotate?
What’s really interesting about MTG Foundations is that the set won’t rotate out after three years like other Standard-legal releases, instead it’s set to remain in Standard until at least 2029, and Magic’s lead designers are already discussing the possibility of extending its stay even further.
In other words, all Foundations cards will be part of the format for the foreseeable future. It’s an intriguing prospect: a set of cards that will always be available to players looking to build MTG decks. Whatever Wizards adds to this set will likely become a near-permanent part of Standard Magic.
We’re especially interested to see which MTG planeswalker cards and legendary characters will be immortalized in this way. Wizards has promised five mythic rare planeswalkers, one of each color. Based on the official artwork released by the company, we can expect Ajani and Liliana cards, but we’ll have to keep our eyes peeled for further clues.
Spoilers for MTG Foundations
Foundation contains a mix of new and reprinted cards, and we’ve already seen a few of each. Rather than just having a baseline of weak cards, this MTG set seems to have a fair number of powerful cards in it. There seems to be a main focus on classic, well-known cards, and cards with very simple effects.
Wizards has only revealed a couple of new cards so far: Nine-Lives Familiar is a fantastic noble card with some great flavor text: This poor Mog looks destined to be sent to the witch’s oven and fitted with skull clamps.
Then there’s Anthem of Champions, a very basic, but very cheap, Anthem effect that buffs all your creatures.
Some of the cards that have been reprinted so far include Omniscience, Llanowar Elves, and Day of Judgment, three of which could have a big impact on Standard going forward.
Llanowar Elves makes ramp-based green decks more viable, some kind of Omniscience combo deck is a no-brainer if you have good cards that can revive enchantments, and Day of Judgment is a very cheap board wipe that benefits control decks.
MTG Foundations News and Details
Like most Standard sets, Foundation will be a Draft set. To support this, it will include 20 Gold uncommon cards, two for each color combination in MTG. Each color combination will have one card that enables a specific strategy and one card designed to reward you for following a specific archetype.
Foundations will be sold in the usual Play and Collector boosters, but there are also some new products: the Beginner Box and the Starter Collection. The Beginner Box contains a total of 200 cards (10 packs of 20 cards, two of each color).
The idea is that players will be able to mix and match cards, Jumpstart-style, to instantly create new decks. Not much is known about the Starter Collection, other than it’s been described as the next step and will contain 350 cards in total.
At this time, we don’t know if a Commander deck will be released at the same time as Foundations.
