Rain brings relief from Delhi's scorching heat
Light rain fell in parts of the capital, providing relief from the scorching heat, the weather department said, with the minimum temperature on Friday at 28.4 degrees Celsius, normal for this time of year.
The India Meteorological Department said skies are likely to remain partly cloudy on Saturday and Sunday, bringing some relief from the scorching heat in Delhi over the weekend.
The India Meteorological Department has predicted light rain and thunderstorms in some parts of the city on Friday, with the maximum temperature expected to be around 40 degrees Celsius.
Delhi is experiencing a severe heatwave and severe water crisis.

Narsar Law School students and faculty demand 'sever ties with Israeli universities'
A group of students and teachers from Nalsar Law University in Hyderabad have written to the vice-chancellor demanding that the university sever ties with Israeli educational institutions in protest against the country's actions in Gaza.
A total of 275 LLM, LLM and DoMS students signed a letter calling for “unequivocally condemning Israel's actions in Palestine and severing all ties with international exchange programs with Israeli institutions.”

IMD predicts no heatwave in the country for a few days
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that “heatwave is unlikely to occur in most parts of the country for the next four to five days,” a forecast that is likely to bring some relief to the scorching capital.
The agency's forecast predicted there could be light rain, a dust storm or thunderstorms on Friday.
A minimum temperature of 28.4 degrees Celsius was recorded at Safdarjung station in Delhi.

Election Commission begins preparations for JK elections, voter roll to be released by August 20
The Election Commission (EC) this week announced the revised electoral rolls by August 20, setting in motion preparations for holding state assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, Jharkhand and Maharashtra.
Jharkhand has not had a parliament since it was dissolved in 2018, but the terms of the assemblies in Haryana, Maharashtra and Jharkhand end on November 11, November 26 and January 5, 2025 respectively, so elections need to be held by then.

10th International Day of Yoga celebrated in Israel
More than 300 people from across Israel rolled out their yoga mats and performed asanas at the International Yoga Day celebrations at the Peres Center for Peace and Innovation in Tel Aviv.
First Lady Michal Herzog was guest of honor at the main event of International Yoga Day on Thursday, which included a series of events held across the country.
The event was organised by the Indian Embassy to Israel in collaboration with the Tel Aviv-Jaffa Municipality and the Ministry of Culture and Sports of Israel.

Mamata Banerjee writes to PM Modi seeking delay in implementation of three penal laws
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to postpone the implementation of three criminal laws that are scheduled to come into force on July 1.
In her letter to the Prime Minister, Banerjee said the delay would allow a fresh review of the criminal law by Parliament.
The new Acts are the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and the Bharatiya Sakshya Act.
These laws replace the colonial-era Indian Penal Code, the Code of Criminal Procedure and the Indian Evidence Act, 1872 respectively.

The Consulate General of India in New York in collaboration with the Times Square Alliance hosted a special yoga session at Times Square.
Despite heat warnings being issued for the New York area and daytime temperatures soaring to 93 degrees Fahrenheit (33.8 Celsius), people from all walks of life and nationalities flocked to the heart of New York City's most popular spots early Thursday morning to roll out their yoga mats.

Gujarat celebrates International Yoga Day on India-Pakistan border
A state-level function to celebrate the 10th International Day of Yoga was held at Zero Point near Nadavet in Banaskantha district on the Indo-Pakistan border on Friday in the presence of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.
“More than 1.25 lakh people from Gujarat participated in the Yoga Day celebrations. Yoga has become a national tradition,” Patel said. “This year, the Gujarat government has planned to set up 51 Government Yoga Studios to gift health, wealth and happiness to the people,” he added.
Patel was accompanied by Gujarat Congress leader Shankar Chaudhary, who is also the state legislator from Banaskantha constituency.

Court suspends court order granting bail to Kejriwal in money laundering case
The Delhi High Court has announced that the orders of lower courts “will not be implemented” until the High Court hears the case. This comes after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) moved the High Court challenging the bail granted to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in a money laundering case related to the excise scam. The High Court further said that the case will be listed for hearing once the necessary documents are properly prepared.
