February 12: Alonso becoming a free agent is 'most likely outcome'
One of the key storylines for the Mets this season is what happens to star first baseman Pete Alonso, who is in his final year before becoming a free agent.
Mets director of baseball operations David Stearns only said when speaking to the media on Monday that Alonso is likely to become a free agent next offseason.
Asked about the possibility of Alonso becoming a free agent, Stearns said: “I think that's probably the most likely outcome.” “When you have a talented player in his final year of club control who happens to be represented by (agent) Scott Boras, these things usually end up in free agency.”
